The Fatigue You Can't Feel

Eight years ago, I was rolling on the mats at my BJJ gym when my training partner—let’s call him Marcos—suddenly couldn’t execute a simple sweep. Not because he was out of breath, not because he lacked technique, but because his body had simply decided it was done. We’d been going for two hours, the kind of session where you feel sharp until you don’t. Marcos had pushed through what he thought was normal tiredness, and his body had pushed back. Hard.

That was the day I started questioning everything we thought we knew about fatigue.

For decades, I watched the same pattern play out. My biking group would hit the wall on long rides, convinced they were fine until they weren’t. My friend Andrea, a powerlifter, would miss lifts not because of technique, but because his body had accumulated fatigue he couldn’t feel. Then, two years ago, I found the answer. Not in a lab, but in the saliva of an exhausted cyclist who had just bonked on a climb. His coach had all the usual data—power, heart rate, cadence. All green. But his saliva told the real story.

We isolated the metabolites. We developed the assay. We validated it against the gold standard. And we discovered something that should have been obvious: fatigue isn’t a feeling. It’s a physiological state. And like any physiological state, it can be measured.

We called it the Physiological Fatigue Index. PFI. A single number, objective, quantifiable, derived from a saliva sample. No needles. No labs. No waiting.

The first prototype was a bench-top spectrometer—useful for proof of concept, useless for real life. So we made it smaller. Then smaller still. Now it’s a handheld device that fits in a jersey pocket, or a lateral flow test you can use poolside. Spit, wait two minutes, get a number.

The data doesn’t lie. We’ve validated it with professional cyclists, endurance athletes, and weekend warriors. The correlation between PFI and perceived fatigue is over 0.9. It’s not just accurate—it’s predictive. It tells you when you’re heading for the wall before you hit it.

So here’s my challenge: the next time you’re planning a training session, the next time you’re deciding whether to push through or call it a day, ask yourself this: are you still measuring fatigue with tools that don’t work? Or are you ready for something better?
